A neurologist is a physician who has been trained in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the human nervous system. These disorders include diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles. Neurologists are also involved in pain management, such as patients with face and head pain, neck pain and lower back pain.

In most cases the patient is referred for neurological evaluation by their GP, although Dr Weeks will also accept self-referrals where appropriate (it would be best to discuss the requirements with the secretary).

Initial consultations can take anywhere between thirty and forty minutes, depending on the complexity of the presentation.

Often neurological investigations are needed to help with the diagnosis. Commonly required tests include brain and spinal scans (MRI or CT), tests for epilepsy (Encephalogram, EEG) and tests for nerve and muscle problems (nerve conduction studies and EMG).

Patients are usually seen for a follow-up consultation to discuss the results and possible diagnosis. Further management depends upon the diagnosis itself. Some patients would need treatment supervised by the neurologist whilst other patients, where serious disease has been excluded, are referred back to the GP. Dr Weeks will always prepare a written report for the GP, with a copy to the patient if requested, summarising the consultation and management plan.

Dr Weeks is happy to see private patients at any of the clinics and hospitals listed opposite, and can usually arrange an urgent appointment for the same day in an emergency.
